FRMC Meeting Minutes

Meeting Date and Location

The Thursday, April 9th FRMC Member Meeting was held at Romano’s Italian Restaurant in Littleton starting at 6:30pm.  Attendance was good with 24 members present.  Our host restaurant, Romano’s, made a very nice gesture during the meeting by providing free spumoni deserts to all the attendees to honor our recently deceased Art Apple .

Old Business

So far, 39 club memberships have been renewed for 2026.   We finished last year with 49 memberships.
National Mustang Day is April 17th and a joint driving event is scheduled for Saturday April 18th with the Early Mustang Club of Colorado and Denver Mustang Club.  The event will commence at 9am at the Wooly Mammoth Parking Lot near the intersection of 470 West and I-70 for a cruise that will ultimately finish for a buffet lunch at Snowpack Tavern in Conifer.  Salad, wings, and pizza (including gluten free and vegetarian) will be available for $20/person including tax and tip.  Drinks will be extra and paid separately because Darrel Schwartzkopf of the Early Mustang Club will collect the $20 at the start of the cruise at the Wooly Mammoth lot.  Because the lot is huge, all Mustangs will gather near the back wall of section FF.  With a big turnout expected, it shouldn’t be hard to locate everyone prior to the cruise start.
Since we had to cancel our visit to the National Museum of World War II Aviation in Colorado Springs on Saturday, January 24th  due to bad weather, the members agreed to try again on Saturday, April 25th.    Jim Yank has rescheduled our visit with the museum and they will be expecting us to start our private tour at 11am.  He told the museum to expect 26 members and guests for the tour.   As originally planned, our visit will include a private tour of the facility, including its renowned restoration shop, that should last an estimated hour and a half to two hours.   The cost will be $20 at the door ($15 + $5 for the resto shop) for seniors and $22 for non-seniors.  Be sure and tell the museum you are with FRMC to get that price and be directed to the proper tour.  Following the museum tour, we will be having lunch at The Airplane Restaurant in Colorado Springs at 1665 N Newport Rd.   Our reservation is for 1:45pm.

New Business

The below list of Events of Interest is rapidly expanding so check out things to do there.  Not yet scheduled, but possible club outings to discuss and schedule for 2026 include:

Visit to the Western Museum of Mining & Industry in Colorado Springs
Tour the Colorado Model Railroad Museum in Greeley
Spend a weekday track day at High Plains Raceway outside Byers in July/August
Tour the Cussler Museum of Classic Cars in Arvada
Visit the Rambler Ranch in Elizabeth

John McNurney, who is temporarily grounded following back surgery,  sent the note below describing a May 8th event needing early Mustang participation:
“The English classes at Cresthill Middle School (9195 Cresthill Lane, Highlands Ranch, 80130) every year study a book, “The Outsiders” about coming of age and dealing with class distinctions during the 1960’s. The greasers and socs in the book all drive Mustangs or Corvairs. On Outsiders Day (May 8 this year) the kids get to dress up in period garb, have special foods, a dance, get to see the Outsiders movie, and come out and see the cars that we provide.  The cars have been provided by the Corvair Club and FRMC in the past. We let them get in the cars and we show them all the things that current day cars don’t have. It is pretty much an all-day affair running from about 7:30 am to 2:30 pm with breakfast and lunch items provided. There is a steady stream of young people as various classes are let outside to meet us and mess with the cars. They have been respectful during the visits in previous years.
I am looking for members with early Mustangs to participate. Terry Frank and I have attended previous years.”
FRMC members looking to join Terry and John this year, should let John know at 303-907-7508 or john.mcnurney@gmail.com.  It should be noted that a similar event is in the process of being organized for Lewis Palmer Middle School in Monument May 1st and Jerry Peevyhouse (kpvhouse53@msn.com) is the contact for that.
We all love Rosie’s Diner in Monument, and Stephen Wilson noted that every second Sunday of the month a Cars & Coffee is held from 8am to 11am at the VCA Animal Hospital parking lot which is in the same shopping center as Rosie’s.  So, if you need another excuse to visit Rosie’s besides the great sandwiches and shakes, there you are.  Stephen also noted that the 23rd Annual Tri-Lakes Cruisers Car Show in Monument is scheduled for August 30th and pre-registrations are filling up fast.  Details are below in Events of Interest.
FRMC was asked by a proud father, Mark Spragins, if we could provide a vintage Mustang for photos at a May 23rd wedding of two recent West Point graduates at the Willow Ridge Manor outside Morrison.  John McNurney volunteered his 1967 red convertible for the photo shoot and the bride’s father will make a donation to the FRMC treasury.  Getting to do community events like this and last year’s Mullen High School cheerleader squad photos make us realize the special place the Mustang holds in the American psyche.
The March/April digital issue of The Latest Scoop magazine was released recently.  It is under new ownership and some nice upgrades include articles with photos, and car events across Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico and Oklahoma are sorted into state specific pages which makes The Scoop more user friendly.  Free digital subscriptions are available by registering at www.https://tinyurl.com/Email-Newsletter-Signup.  This subscription will get you an email newsletter with a link to the Latest Scoop issue plus a separate biweekly listing of Colorado car events and the digital SHIFT Colorado magazine every 3 months.  Can’t beat a free deal I say.

The next FRMC meeting will be held Wednesday, May 13th at Romano’s Italian Restaurant at 6:30pm.  We are moving the meeting to Wednesday because a Medicare Seminar has the back room at Romano’s booked on our usual Thursday date.

The 2026 MCA National Show schedule is detailed below in the Upcoming Events of Interest section of these minutes.  There are two National Shows within driving distance of Denver including the May Ponies in the Ozarks show in Missouri and the July Mustangs on the Mother Road show in Tulsa.  Also, the Rio Grande Mustang Club will again be hosting their Mustang Enchantment Regional Show in Albuquerque, NM in May.  A link for registering for the event is shown below in Events of Interest.  As in past years, Larry Standiford will be leading a caravan of club members to Albuquerque with an initial meeting point at Rosie’s Diner in Monument.
CCCC Report
With the monthly meeting being held in Colorado Springs, neither Keith Johnson or Mary Sue Powell were able to attend, so there was no monthly report for FRMC.
Presidents's  Report
Wendell noted that the Rocky Mountain Mustang Roundup in June is coming together well.  He also told us that he is scheduled for hip surgery on June 23rd and will be pretty much home-bound for the two months following, so our new vice-president, Christy Weathers will be leading our meetings during that timeframe.
